Add a wrapper for calloc which checks for integer overflows in the
calculation of the size to allocate.
Use xcalloc to allocate an array of objects instead of calculating the
size ourselves, which might cause an integer overflow.

This is a very cosmetic change but I think it is good to be
standards compliant. The standard defines <poll.h> and not
<sys/poll.h>:

When building against musl libc it silences some annoying cpp
warnings like this:
